Transparent ion-exchangeable silicate glasses with high fracture toughness

Abstract:

Provided herein are glass based articles comprising SiO.sub.2 in a range from about 20 mol % to about 80 mol %; Al.sub.2O.sub.3 in a range from about 2 mol % to about 60 mol %; MgO; Li.sub.2O; La.sub.2O.sub.3 in an amount greater than or equal to about 3 mol %; a sum of alkali metal oxides (R.sub.2O) is greater than or equal to about 6 mol %; and a sum of MgO and Al.sub.2O.sub.3 is greater than or equal to about 28 mol %, wherein the glass based article is free of B.sub.2O.sub.3.
